Velvet Underschiste 2018
Alex Durand, Languedoc, France
Grenache - Syrah - Carignan- Mourvedre
Alex Durand is part of these young, beautiful and talented winemakers who achieved from their very first vintage something exceptional, precise and honest. What is typical about his first children as he calls them is the grape and the terroir. Alex does long maceration on most of his wines for almost 60 days without any extraction which allows him to get some young wines with the right structure, depth and length without extracting the dry tannins from the skin and the seeds. The Velvet Underschiste is made of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 5% Carignan et 5% Mourvèdre, all grapes grown on schiste soil which makes this one a delightful and intriguing wine with the right amount of spices, acidity finishing on a lovely earth and mineral core!
