Pirate Cannerie

"Did you know that a third of the fish caught in the world never reaches our plates? That industrial fishing is killing off small-scale fishing and damaging the resource? That over 10 million tonnes of food are wasted every year in the fishing industry?"

Canning is an old, healthy technique that allows you to take a "perishable foodstuff", package it and give it a 4-year use-by date.

Pirate is an artisanal micro-conserverie based in St Laurent de Gosse, in the Landes region of south-west France.

In response to the huge amount of food wasted on fish, Lucie Lesgourgues began Pirate with the aim of enhancing the value of the sea’s resources by making fish consumption more sustainable through modern, bold yet subtle recipes. All the while respecting and working with the seasonal nature of the ocean.

All the raw materials come from local, artisanal fishing (at the St Jean de Luz fish auction), and the products are processed exclusively by hand on a repurposed duck farm. Now in its second year, Pirate is starting to grow, and has a network of retailers in France and Europe.

Not stopping there, Lucie's vision extends beyond the can: with plans to launch workshops on sustainable fishing for the public, Pirate Cannery is not just a brand; it's a movement towards a more informed, sustainable approach to seafood consumption.
